Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such medications need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
